new station

Design-build of a new 100,000 sf sustainably designed Metrorail station on WMATA’s Yellow and Blue lines. Situated between Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and the City of Alexandria along a 3.1-mile stretch of Metrorail line that previously did not have a station, the new station is key to catalyzing the development of the surrounding area into a walkable urban hub. Bordered on one side by wetlands and by Amtrak and CSX rail tracks on the other, the fully ADA accessible Station features two 800-foot-long platforms, an entry pavilion, a landscaped approach to the Potomac Greens neighborhood, a new AC switchgear room, 10 elevators, escalators, involved re-alignment of the Metrorail tracks through the new Station, and power upgrades to six other stations. As the lead Joint Venture partner, Halmar was responsible for managing all the work, including quality control, and provided 15 of the key supervisory positions for the project. Self-performed work included all sitework, utilities, earth moving, and concrete. Extensive coordination with Railroad personnel was required to develop a design and construction approach that minimized impacts to railroad operations during construction, and future maintenance activities to provide long-term economic benefits. All work was performed while providing safety to the traveling public, construction phasing, and coordinating public outreach to the local community.
