Expanding transit mobility
The VWE (I-678) is a heavily congested urban corridor serving vehicle and commercial truck traffic access to and from JFK International Airport and its air cargo centers. Above the constrained VWE are several roadway and railway bridges providing vehicle and train access to and from Jamaica Station – the heart of Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) operations, connecting passengers to LIRR trains, NYCT subway, and JFK AirTrain. This challenging project includes the replacement, rehabilitation and retrofit of three LIRR railway bridges and one vehicular bridge over the VWE. As Design-Builder and Prime Contractor, Halmar meticulously developed work zone traffic control (WZTC) plans and worked around the clock to execute a remarkable construction sequence that allows cars, trucks and trains moving on and above the VWE to continue to move safely during construction. Utilizing accelerated bridge construction (ABC) techniques and self-propelled modular transporters (SPMTs). NYSDOT commended Halmar’s resilient team for completing sensitive and critical construction operations, including installing, reactivating, and testing the new LIRR tracks ahead of scheduled time.
