Substations are key

Halmar was contracted to construct a new three-story steel framed Substation No. 9, elevated above 100-year flood level, that will provide traction power to a portion of the PATH train tracks in Harrison, NJ. The 42-year-old electrical Substation No. 9 was at the end of its service life when it sustained damage during Hurricane Sandy. Equipment was located outdoors, unprotected from severe weather conditions, and spare parts were no longer available. In addition, the existing electrical power would not be able to handle the increased demand for PATH’s new PA-5 train cars and the rise in train service. The scope of work includes site clearing; installing structural steel, masonry and architectural exterior metal wall panels; furnishing, installing and commissioning new electrical equipment, such as switchgear, transformers, rectifiers and tie breakers for track power; exterior U/G site utilities; MPT; commissioning of the new substation; and demolishing the existing substation which remained in service until the new one was built and activated.
