Problem Solvers
Doomsayers denied, progress made
A vital link in the I-95 corridor (300,000 AADT), the multiple award-winning Alexander Hamilton Bridge project consisted of a major reconstruction and widening of the eight-lane main bridge into a 10-lane bridge and all associated approach roads and ramps, in total nine bridges and four temporary ramp bridges; non-conforming features were corrected as well to enhance the safety of the corridor. Over $20M in community improvements were delivered including a new skateboard park designed by Tony Hawk. Robust engineering reduced costs and enabled the project to overcome an 11-month delay to finish on time. Halmar provided most of the project management staff and direct labor, as well as third party coordination, DBE inclusion, and community outreach.
For months, the media was warning the public of “Carmageddon” where traffic delays were expected to back-up nine miles once construction started. With clever ingenuity and planning, Halmar re-sequenced the staging, improved egress, and reduced merge-time dwells to avoid the dreaded “Carmageddon.”
