Meet Emily

A couple weeks ago, our friends at Herrenknecht AG introduced the second of the two Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) commissioned for our Potomac River Tunnel project in Washington, D.C.. Our Halmar executives, joined by DC Water and our project partners CBNA, got the chance to attend the ceremony in Germany to reveal the second TBM. The CBNA-Halmar Clean Rivers JV (CHJV) with DC Water commissioned two TBMs for the project, naming them after the Edmonson sisters, Mary & Emily. The Edmonson Sisters escaped enslavement and became icons in the abolitionist movement through their protests of the Fugitive Slave Act. They helped pave the way for civil rights with a daring escape from slavery in 1848 that began on the Potomac River.

Mary, our North TBM, arrived in D.C. earlier in the year and is currently being assembled to be launched early next year. Emily, our South TBM, is due to be shipped and arrive in Washington early Spring of 2026.
