A section of the Phase 2 project will be repurposed by rehabilitating an existing tunnel built in the 1970s and outfit the future 116th Street Station, this is a key project component and big cost-containment measure for the Second Avenue Subway project. The team will bore two tunnels to 125th Street and then west to Malcom X Boulevard using two Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) between 35 and 120 feet below ground, including excavating a cavern for the future 125th Street Station.
